Staying well in older age

NHS Kent and Medway has released a guide to help people in Kent and Medway age well and live independently for longer.

The booklet provides top tips on how to stay healthy in older age and information about services to support your physical and mental wellbeing.

Dr Kate Langford, chief medical officer at NHS Kent and Medway, said: “As we get older, it's more important than ever to take steps to look after our health and wellbeing to allow us to live healthier, longer lives.

“The NHS booklet is packed with information to help keep you healthy and is free and easy to read. Find out about the small changes you can make to help keep you well in older age.”

Top tips include:

It's important to take up the offer of the free NHS Health Check, as it can tell you whether you're at higher risk of getting certain health problems. The check is available to people aged between 40 and 74 who don't have kidney or cardiovascular disease.

Make sure you have your flu and Covid-19 vaccines when invited. It is important to top up your protection, even if you have had a vaccine or been ill with flu or Covid-19 before, as immunity fades over time and these viruses change each year.

If you are struggling with loneliness, loss or depression, there's support available to help you, such as NHS talking therapies.
