We are strong when we stand together: A statement from our chief executive

5 August 2024

I have always been enormously proud of the multi-cultural society in which we live and the richness in culture, diversity and experience that brings.

Working in health and social care, we know just how much our diversity supports the people we care for every day. Our system would not work if it wasn’t for the contribution of everyone in it.

You cannot fail to have seen media coverage, during the past few days, of the civil unrest that has taken place in different parts of the country.

It is outrageous, shocking and, quite simply, not acceptable.

I am appalled by the behaviour of a minority causing anxiety and fear through actions that have no place in our society. Everyone should be able to go about their daily business and not feel threatened in any way.

I know I am not alone in this. As a system in Kent and Medway, we stand united against any form of racism, discrimination, Islamophobia and abuse. Collectively, we condemn any action of this kind.

While the unrest we have seen in other parts of the country has not yet taken place in Kent and Medway, we don’t know that it won’t, given the level of tension at the moment.

Please remain vigilant when travelling and support each other during this time. We will not tolerate any form of abuse, discrimination or racism in any of our organisations.

The police are taking decisive measures against those participating in this unrest and I support this wholeheartedly.

I understand our staff may be feeling anxious and uneasy and would like to remind you there is health and wellbeing support available for health and social care staff across Kent and Medway.

We are strong when we stand together.

Best wishes,

Paul Bentley

Chief Executive of NHS Kent and Medway
