Working together to tackle diabetes

29 September 2022

The Diabetes Prevention Team hit the town in Ashford to help those at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Living Well Taking Control – which leads the NHS Healthier You Diabetes Prevention Programme – joined the NHS Health Checks team from Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust in County Square Shopping Centre.

The team carried out BMI, cholesterol, and blood pressure checks on those passing by to help prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and kidney disease.

People who identified as being at risk of diabetes were given information and advice about the life-changing prevention programme.

Paul Austin, Diabetes Project Manager at NHS Kent and Medway, said: “After collaborating with the NHS Health Checks team, we were able to arrange for our diabetes prevention provider to attend the health event in Ashford.

“Where health checks revealed a high risk of diabetes, the team was on hand to engage with the public about the programme and everything that can be done to combat this disease.

“This was the first of hopefully many collaborations, bringing teams together to help fight against diabetes.”
